AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY - ACT Canberra is the capital of Australia, with a population of about 300,000. It was built on plains at the foot of the Australian Alps and covers 805 square kilometres. Canberra is a three-hour drive from Sydney. Canberra is in the middle of the two largest cities Sydney and Melbourne. Aboriginals were the first to live in the area, and that is how it got its’ name, Canberra, which means “meeting place”. It was built around a man made lake, but there are plenty of other places to swim and sunbathe. Canberra’s main sport is cycling, so if you are active on the bike you will love riding the bike trails, parks, streets and hills.
The ACT is a very popular tourist destination. Many tourists are employed in hotels, restaurants, and tour bus companies. The summer season in Canberra is usually hot and dry, with a nice and mild spring season. Temperatures range from 16-30°C (60-86°F). Autumn is very mild, however the winter can be very cool and wet, with the temperature ranging from 7-15°C (45-59°F). It is amazing in its diverse environment and surrounds: There is a combination of coastal land, forests, mountains and rural country. You can visit for quiet relaxing time or for adventure and adrenalin!
Sydney, one of the largest cities in Australia, is the capital of NSW. Widely known for it’s great beaches and cultural events, it is also know for it’s beautiful harbour bridge, Darling harbour and Sydney opera house. Sydney was also chosen to host the 2000 Olympic games, and became one of the most memorable events. There are many attractions such as, the Rocks, the Zoo, the Botanic gardens, Bondi Beach, Fort Denison and Kings Cross. You can also take a trip to the Blue Mountains and enjoy skiing, snow boarding or just taking in the beautiful scenery.
There are many cities in NSW hosting educational campuses including: Armidale, Newcastle, and Wollongong. The temperature in New South Wales stays temperate. Summers are warm to hot with slight humidity, temperatures ranges from 18-26°C (64-79°F). Winters keep to a mild 7-18°C (44-64°F). Return to Australia's States
VICTORIA - VIC South of New South Wales is Victoria. It is one of the most populated states, with a population of 4, 200,000 covering 228, 000 square kilometres. Victoria has beautiful gardens, nature reserves and natural parks. It also has one of Australia’s most popular beaches, Bell Beach, rated very highly among tourists. Despite its size, 26% of Australians live in Victoria, and most of them live in the state capital, Melbourne.
Melbourne is a very cool, cultural and artistic town. There is something to do for people of all ages and backgrounds. Its cricket ground is home to the Aussie Rules Football team in the winter and cricket in the summer. Great markets, beaches, and entertainment keep both travellers and locals busy. Melbourne also has an international airport and rail links to other states.
Victoria boasts 36% of covered forest lands and inland lakes. The longest river is the Murray River. 1600km of vast coastline separates Australia from the southern state of Tasmania. It borders the southern ocean and Bass Strait. Called the great ocean road, it is a great place to tour and see beautiful scenery. It is also great to explore the Grampians or enjoy many great rivers, lakes and valleys. It is also fun to visit the penguins at Phillip Island.
Victoria’s climate is well known among Australians. There is an immense amount of rainfall, it is very temperate and summers range between 13-25°C (55-77°F), with winters between 5-13°C (41-55°F). Return to Australia's States
TASMANIA - TAS Tasmania is a small island located in the south of Australia. As the smallest state, it has a population of 473,000. Dense rainforests, mountain peaks, alpine meadows, great lakes, eucalyptus stands and fertile stretches of farmland are easily accessible. Smaller islands surround and the most popular ones are: Kings and Flinders.
TAS' capital city is Hobart and almost half the population of Tasmania lives in or around the city, with a population of 193,000. It is a very distinct and beautiful city. Its beautiful harbour attracts boats from all over the worl, and has excellent galleries, cafes, pubs and markets.
Tasmania is popular for outdoor recreation. Mountains cover the land and its great environment allows for extreme adventure. There is great wildlife roaming, one of the most popular is the Tasmanian devil. Tasmania has a British heritage shining through different culture and events. Over 20% of the island has been declared a World Heritage area, with nearly a third of the island protected in 14 national parks.
The climate in Tasmania stays around a mild maritime temperature. The summer ranges from 11-21°C (50-72°F), and the winter 4-11°C (39-52°F). Return to Australia's States QUEENSLAND - QLD Queensland is in Northeast Australia, and is the second largest state and third most populated. The capital is Brisbane and over a third of Queenslanders live there. There are activity centres around the Brisbane River. It is a good spot if you like jogging, biking, rollarblading, or just taking a walk along the riverbanks. Brisbane is full of markets, parks, restaurants, and nightlife. There is also a huge man made pool for the public to use for swimming or sun tanning in the sand.
If you travel one hours south of Brisbane you will reach the Gold Coast, which has excellent surfing beaches and resorts. An hour north of Brisbane there is the sunshine coast, which similar to the Gold Coast has great beaches and resorts. Queensland also has a beautiful national park on Moreton Island, which has excellent beaches, sand dunes, and crater lakes. It is great for day trips and snorkelling, swimming, or just relaxing.
Another attraction that lies on the coast of far north Queensland - the Great Barrier Reef. It is popular because of the vast area it covers. There is 2000 kilometres of coral reef with some 30,000 species of marine life. It is a great place to experience magnificent diving and/or snorkelling.
Queenslands climate is good throughout the whole year. The sunshine is great in the summer and temperature ranges from 20-30°C (68-86°F). The winter is not cold either, usually between the ranges of 9-20°C (48-68°F). Return to Australia's States SOUTH AUSTRALIA - SA South Australia is the third largest state and covers one-eighth of the total area of Australia. Half of the state is farmland and the other desert. Vast deserts are scattered making it the driest state in the second driest continent of the world, behind Antarctica. SA is responsible for producing much of the country’s produce, barely, wheat and salt. It has great vineyards, such as the Barossa Valley, and makes some of the best wines in the world. There are three large lakes which are, Eyre, Gardiner and Torrens.
South Australia was the first state to give women the right to vote, allow women into the police force and admit women as university undergraduates. It was also the first state to appoint a woman to the Australian Supreme Court bench, and to a University chancellor.
The capital of South Australia is Adelaide. Adelaide is known for it’s old style culture, and classical stone buildings giving the city's prestigious charm. Half an hour drive from the city are picturesque hills and beaches.
South Australia has a Mediterranean climate, where the summer season is hot and dry and the spring mild. Temperatures ranges from 16-30°C (60-86°F). Autumns are mild, however the winters can get cool and wet, with temperatures ranging from 7-15°C (45-59°F). Return to Australia's States
NORTHERN TERRITORY - NT The base of the Northern territory is the Australian Outback. It is filled with massive rocks, stunning canyons, sand dunes, rivers, lagoons, gorges, cliffs and wildlife. There are many adventure tours offered, because there are so many things to do and see.
The capital is Darwin is a great place to see. You can take one of the many tours offered. It has markets, food stalls and festivals all year round.
Alice Springs is a city in the middle of the territory, where people go to take great outback tours. People can see wonderful sights, such as Uluru, the Olga’s, Kings canon, and other great surrounds. Make sure you also see: Devils marble, Katherine Gorge, Tennant Creek, Macdonnell Ranges, and Nhulunbuy/Gove.
Another part is the Aboriginal culture. Over 40 different dialects are spoken in the territory alone! Aboriginees live in 25% of the Territory and own over 50%. They have the strongest presence in this territory.
The climate is extreme, with summer very hot and wet in the inland and a very tropical coastline. Temperatures range from 25-35°C (77-95°F). Winters do not get very cold at all, staying between 19-30°C (66-86°F). Return to Australia's States WESTERN AUSTRALIA - WA Western Australia is a third the size of the country, making it Australia’s largest state. Even though the state covers 2.5 million square kilometres, it only has one-twelfth of the national population at 1, 900,000. It is a very quiet place. One third of the states income comes from the mining.
The capital is Perth and it is described as the most beautiful capital in the country. It has one of the cleanest and most scenic coastlines known. It is one of the sunniest places when all the states change their clocks for daylight savings time, Perth has to stay on the same time all year round, because of it’s incredible sunshine!
The closest Australian city to Perth is Adelaide, which is 2000 kilometres away! Southeast Asia has cities closer to Perth than other Australian cities. Because of its isolation and quiet nature, WA is a very peaceful, relaxing, and slow paced place to visit. The largest fish in the world are in WA, the whale shark has been found in the northern waters and up to 13 metres long! Some of the best and largest surfing waves in the world can be found near Margaret River.
The climate in Western Australia is different from that of other states. When it is warm and dry in the northern state, it is wet and cool in the south. The summer season ranges from 17-29°C (63-84°F), and winter from 8-17°C (46-63°F).
