Study Abroad and Exchange - Australia

Australia is a popular destination for Study Abroad and Exchange students. Students come for single or (often extended to) double semester (full year) programs, gaining academic credit toward their degrees back home.

Australian universities have study abroad and student exchange agreements with higher education institutions throughout the world. Each year, thousands of international students choose to study in Australia because of the high academic standards, memorable lifestyle and travel opportunities on offer.

Courses and qualifications

Study abroad and exchange programs are normally one or two semester periods of study undertaken outside your home country, for which partial or full credit is obtained toward the student's degree at their home institution. Credit transfers for studies completed in Australia vary depending upon the academic system at the student's home institution.

Study abroad students are usually allowed enrolment in any subjects offered by the respective university provided they meet any prerequisites for individual subjects. You are strongly advised to speak with your academic advisor for answers to all the questions below.

Before you commit to an exchange, you should consider the following questions:

  • Does my current university give credit hours or grades?
  • Am I able to count subjects taken as part of my study abroad towards my major?
  • Will these fulfill general education requirements?
  • Will selected subjects count as electives?
  • Will they show on my home transcript with or without a letter grade or a grade point average?

Entry information

Students are generally eligible to apply to study abroad at Australian universities if they are currently enrolled at a university and have completed a minimum of two semesters of full-time study. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must satisfy English language requirements. These can differ between universities and students should check with the education counsellor about the proposed institution prior to application. In some cases study abroad and exchange students may be able to undertake additional English language training during their study abroad semesters.

To obtain a full-time student visa, study abroad and exchange students must be enrolled full-time at the institution of their choice. Generally, one semester of study is between 12 to 14 weeks in duration.
