Murdoch University was established primarily as a research university in 1973 in 1973 as a research university and named after Sir Walter Murdoch, a prominent Australian academic and essayist, and Murdoch aims to live up to his prominence.

English Courses

South Street campus offers General and Academic English through its Murdoch Language Institute. Murdoch also accesses the Perth International College of English which provides General and Academic English as well as a range of other English courses. Phoenix Academy is another Murdoch-preferred provider of English courses, offering General and Academic English, along with a range of other English courses.

Location

The University is located approximately 20 minutes by car (15 kilometres) from Perth and 10 minutes by car (eight kilometres) from Fremantle.

Entry Requirements

English language requirements:- Murdoch generally requires and IELT of at least 6.0 overall, with no band less than 6.0.

Academic requirements: undergraduate admission generally requires the successful completion of the equivalent of Year 12 High School, but may vary depending on country of origin. Postgraduate admission generally requires successful completion of a recognised Bachelor degree and may also require relevant work experience, depending on the course.

Enrolment dates

Murdoch University does not impose strict deadlines for applications, apart from a small number of courses. However, it is advisable to apply at least three months in advance of the semester in which you wish to commence study.

Student activities

The Student Guild organises regular activities for students throughout the year. There are also recreational facilities available on-campus and the local community offers a range of entertainment and recreational options for more informal socialising, such as cafes, restaurants, cinema, shops, clubs and hotels.

WA Biotechnology strategy unveiled at Murdoch

Western Australia unveiled its' biotechnology strategy at the State Biotechnology Agricultural Centre based at Murdoch University's South Street campus.

Murdoch University Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Yovich, joined state Premier Alan Carpenter and Science and Innovation Minister Fran Logan in praising the government's commitment to biotechnology.

"I would commend the Premier and Minister for showing foresight in investing in a strategy and infrastructure that can turn this potential into reality, said Professor Yovich.

"Murdoch University is already a major player in bio-technology research and we were delighted the Premier chose to make his announcement on the campus".

Murdoch's new Chancellor appointed

The Murdoch University Senate has unanimously elected its new Chancellor to take over from Emertius Professor Geoffrey Bolton. The appointee is Mr. Terry Budge, a member of the University Senate since 2004.

Mr. Budge has had a disitnguished career in the finance sector and brings with him a strong business background. He will assume duties in November.
Professor Bolton paid tribute to Mr. Budge's business background and experience which he believed would prove invaluable to the university in the long run.

"As a member of Senate he has shown a lively sympathy with Murdoch's values", Professor Bolton said.
