English Proficiency Requirements
As governed by TAFE Queensland and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, international students whose first language is not English, require an English proficiency level as follows:
Certificate Programs:
IELTS General band. Overall score of 5.5, with no less a score of 5.0 within
each individual test band
TOEFL – IBT Internet 70 (no section score less than 1
TOEFL - Computer 197
TOEFL - Paper 530
ISLPR 2+ (per test band - reading, writing, listening, speaking)
ELICOS Upper intermediate
TOEIC 650 (minimum reading score must be 350)
TAFE Queensland Certificate IV in English
EAP Successful completion of EAP 1
First Cambridge Certificate of English, A or B grade
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
Sound Achievement, year 12 English in an Australian school
Sound Achievement, year 11 and 12 English Communication in a Queensland high school
Diploma and Above Programs:
IELTS Academic band. Overall score of 5.5, with no less a score of 5.0 within
each individual test band
TOEFL – IBT Internet 70 (no section score less than 1
TOEFL - Computer 197
TOEFL - Paper 530 (paper based score), 197 (computer based score)
ISLPR 2+ (per test band - reading, writing, listening, speaking)
ELICOS Advanced
TOEIC 650 (minimum reading score must be 350)

Please Note:
• For students from a ‘level 4’ country who are applying for study from their country of origin, an IELTS certificate is the only acceptable English proficiency test. (Overall score no less than 5.5, with no less a score of 5.0 within each individual test band). Please note this is a mandatory requirement of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
• For students from a ‘level 4’ country who are applying for study and already here in Australia, English proficiency levels from a reputable English language school may be accepted in lieu of the IELTS English proficiency test.
• Any person (regardless of country level), who has completed Australian year 10, 11 or 12 and who has achieved a ‘sound’ result in English studies will be automatically accepted into our certificate programs. Documentary evidence of this must be provided to SkillsTech Australia at time of application or no later than 1 month prior to commencement of study.
Test results must have been gained in the last 12 months.
• Any person who has completed Australian year 12 and who has achieved a ‘sound’ result in English studies will be automatically accepted into our diploma/advanced diploma program. Documentary evidence of this must be provided to SkillsTech Australia at time of application or no later than 1 month prior to commencement of study. Test results must have been gained in the last 12 months.
• Applicants who are unable to provide documentary evidence of any of the above are required to sit an IELTS test (or equivalent), to verify their level of English proficiency.
• Persons from a level 1, 2 or 3 countries, in lieu of an IELTS score (overall 5.5 with no less than 5.0 within each individual test band) or study in an Australian high school; can be admitted through other English proficiency pathways such as: TOEFL, ISLPR, English studies with a reputable English language school.
• Persons from a level 1, 2 or 3 country, for certificate level programs; require a minimum level of English proficiency of upper-intermediate. Documentary evidence of this must be provided to SkillsTech Australia at time of application or no later than 1 month prior to
commencement of study. Test results must have been gained in the last 12 months. English proficiency certification must have been gained from a reputable English language school, here in Australia.
• Persons from a level 1, 2 or 3 countries, for diploma/advanced diploma level programs; require a minimum level of English proficiency of advanced or higher. Documentary evidence of this must be provided to SkillsTech Australia at time of application or no later than 1 month prior to commencement of study. Test results must have been gained in the last 12 months. English proficiency certification must have been gained from a reputable English language school, here in Australia.
• SkillsTech Australia reserves the right to accept or deny entry to any applicant.
