Central West TAFE

1. Overview

Providing education and training opportunities for the rural areas of the Mid West, Gascoyne and Murchison since 1958, Central West TAFE features campuses in Geraldton, Carnarvon and Exmouth. Students at Central West TAFE can choose from a large variety of study options, e.g. face to face in class or online and distance studies. This TAFE is dedicated to preparing its students to fill regional skill requirements, today and in the future.

2. Location

Central West TAFE is based in one of the most scarcely populated regions of Western Australia. Covering an area of more than 600.000 km² only some 70.000 people have made a home in this arid part of the country. Along the coastline natural wonders such as Ningaloo

Reef and Shark Bay attract tourists from all over the world. However, the vast inland of this region is mostly visited by those in search of outback romantic or raw materials. Gold, nickel and salt form the foundation for the local economy. Due to its enormous size it is hard to determine a typical climate for the area. It is safe to say though, that while the coastline receives a substantial annual rainfall which allows agriculture, the inland districts are ruled by dry to desert-like conditions. Hot summers, with temperatures in excess of 45°C and occasional cyclones, are followed by mild winters, with tops around 20°C.

3. Campuses

The three campuses of Central West TAFE are located in Geraldton, Carnarvon and Exmouth.

Of these, the town of Geraldton, 430 kilometres north of Perth, is home to the main campus.

Modern learning facilities such as the Ciba Tek Centre which provides a 24 hour computer access for the students are just one advantage of the campus. Furthermore, the Zeewijk

Training Restaurant is not just a training institution for Hospitality and Commercial Cookery students, but also occasionally open to the public.

4. Students Accomodation

Unlike the metropolitan TAFEs, Central West offers the opportunity to live on campus. The so-called Pepperell Village with its twelve self-contained units even sports a recreational area and a gym. Sharing the living quarters with fellow students from different countries and backgrounds might be a great chance to widen ones horizon.

5. Main Program Areas

Central West TAFE delivers a wide range of courses for its students. The Main Program Areas are:

o Art
o Construction & Rural Industries
o Health, Education & Community Services
o Hospitality, Business & Computing
o Marine & Aquaculture
o Mining, Metals, Engineering & Transport

6. Entry Requirements

These may vary from course to course. In general, it is necessary to provide a school education that is the equivalent to the Australian years 10-12 with passes in English. Furthermore, enrolment at TAFE WA requires a minimum level of English language skills (equivalent of IELTS academic version min. of 5.5).

7. Student Activities

There are lots of things to do around the three campuses. The proximity to the Indian Ocean opens the door to countless water-based activities. Whether fishing, surfing or simple swimming suits you best, you will not be disappointed.

The spectacular Ningaloo Reef at the doorsteps of the Exmouth campus invites to dive and snorkel. During the winter months this is one of the rare places to encounter the massive, yet friendly, whale shark.
The seemingly endless Outback, is interrupted by attractions such as the Pinnacles near Geraldton and Kalbarri National Park with its ancient gorges.
