Australian Swimmers: Monash University - The Australian Institute of Sport - CSIRO
Australia's swimming team may have a secret weapon for the 2012 London Olympic Games if the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) succeeds in giving the sport a mathematical makeover. In order to understand how water interacts with the human body during competitive swimming, the CSIRO is building a virtual model of a swimmer and using mathematical techniques known as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to run simulations of the virtual model swimming in a pool, and experiment with the effectiveness of different swimming styles and strokes in the water. Assisted by Monash University and the Australian Institute of Sport, the CSIRO is redeploying technology designed for animating water for movies and modelling volcanoes and tsunamis.
