Professor Harry Messel has been appointed a companion in the Order of Australia(AO).
Professor Messel was Head of Physics at Sydney University from 1952 to 1987. In 1954, he established the Science Foundation for Physics (then the Nuclear Research Foundation) to support science education, research and training within the school of Physics and to promote science to the broader community.
His influence and vision went beyond the University of Sydney:
- He was a computer pioneer in Australia
- He made invaluable contributions to high school education in Australia
- He influenced Australian government policy in the field of science education in his capacity as a advisor.
Professor Messel's enthusiasm for science has not dimmed throughout the years and this decoration is seen as timely for this pioneer of science education in Australia.
